Reputed mob underboss arrested in gambling-extortion probe
December 2, 2006
BOSTON A reputed underboss of the New England Mafia has been arrested on gambling and extortion charges.
The Essex District Attorney's office said Carmen Salvatore DiNunzio was arrested by state police in Boston's North End after being indicted by a grand jury.
Authorities say they have been investigating alleged mob-related extortion of bookmakers involving DiNunzio for about five years. A state police officer testified in federal court last year that a Lynnfield bookmaker awaiting trial on federal racketeering charges was paying DiNunzio two-thousand dollars a month for permission to operate his gambling business.
DiNunzio is held on 250 thousand dollars bail at the state police barracks in Danvers. He'll be arraigned on Monday in Salem Superior Court.
