Race cars prepare for the start of a race at TalladegaSince the day it first opened in September 1969, the Talladega Superspeedway has become a national landmark in the world of professional motor sports. For almost 40 years, fans of high speed auto racing have enjoyed the ups and downs that have taken place at the world famous Talladega Superspeedway.

Those who lived in the community of Talladega, Alabama, witnessed magic happen in 1969. That was the year that construction workers transformed an uninspired stretch of land into a modern masterpiece for auto racing enthusiasts. Originally known as the Alabama International Motor Speedway, the Talladega Superspeedway was constructed on a patch of farmland that was situated next to two abandoned airport runways. It was, without a doubt, the largest revitalization project that Talladega has ever seen.

NASCAR auto racing, as we know it, will never be the same. Most people who were watching the big race in Homestead over the weekend were watching to see if Jimmie Johnson or Jeff Gordon would reign supreme in the race for the cup. Those with a more discerning eye were looking past the race at the bigger picture, as we say goodbye to an era of auto racing the way we have come to know it.

The new logo for the NASCAR Nationwide SeriesNASCAR Gets A New Look With Nationwide Insurance

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) has unveiled the new logo that will be used to brand its partnership with Nationwide Insurance. The new deal places Nationwide Insurance as the primary sponsor of NASCAR’s number two series, as a replacement to Anheuser-Busch, who sponsored the series for a quarter century.

DOVER, Del. - Perhaps it was best that Kyle Petty and Denny Hamlin never stood toe-to-toe.

Hamlin said that given the chance, their altercation in the garage area during Sunday's Dodge Dealers 400 at Dover International Speedway could have escalated into much more.

"Don't smack me in the helmet. You smack me in the helmet, I'm going to punch you in the face," Hamlin said after the race. "I'd like for him to call me sometime this week before next race.

The lame-duck driver of the No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet revealed Wednesday in Dallas his plan to drive the No. 88 Chevrolet Impala SS for Hendrick Motorsports next year with dual sponsorship from existing Hendrick partners, the US National Guard and Pepsi-Cola.

When Earnhardt takes leave of his ride with Dale Earnhardt Inc. to join Hendrick's powerhouse four-car stable of four-time champion Jeff Gordon, defending champion Jimmie Johnson, and Casey Mears, he will drive an emerald green-and-white Mountain Dew AMP Energy Drink car in 20 points races and a blue-and-white National Guard car in the other 16 points races in the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.
