LAS VEGAS - Poker professional Scotty Nguyen won nearly $2 million at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas on Monday, topping a field of 148 players and emerging from a marathon final table with his fifth gold bracelet.
Nguyen beat out 23-year-old Michael DeMichele in H.O.R.S.E., a rotating-game tournament that cost $50,000 to enter. The various games and limited betting structure reward all around play and is said to truly reward the best players over the long haul. In more than 30 years, very little has changed in the World Series of Poker. Sure, the $10,000 buy in isn’t as much money as it use to be, causing thousands of more people to play in the event every year. But the fundamentals of the world’s leading poker tournament haven’t changed much, until now.
When Harrahs, the world’s largest gambling company, bought out the Horseshoe Casino brand, they also acquired the WSOP, which was started by the Horseshoe. Harrahs immediately went to work tinkering with small changes to a recipe that had been successful since some of those doing the tinkering were still in diapers. |

One day, way back in the year 2001 (ancient times for online poker), a friend came to me with what was then a shocking revelation. I don't want to reveal his name, so I'll call him "Jed." My good buddy Jed had devised a way to cheat while playing poker on the Internet. By today's standards, he was using a crude system, but it actually did work. And over time, he got good at it. |

Nearly everyone who takes up the game of poker, at one time or another considers the possibility of trying to cheat. After all, wouldn't it be great to take everyone's money without going through the effort of playing well and suffering bad beats? At first glance, cheating seems incredibly attractive. As a cheater, you have a secret advantage over other players, increasing your chance of winning, and if you do things well enough, nobody ever knows what you're up to. Wow. You could even go on to become fabulously rich. |

In 2003, the world of poker was forever changed when Chris Moneymaker, a man who learned and practiced the game online, became the World Series of Poker Champion. The next two years, Greg Raymer and Joseph Hashem, both of whom became proficient from playing online, won the titles. Immediately after the first Internet-poker website went online, people began to wonder if there might be a way to beat the system through cheating. It didn’t take long for players to realize this fact: While they were playing online poker, they could be speaking on the telephone to another player at the same table, and no one else would be the wiser.
This idea of working with another player was not new to the world of poker. At brick-and-mortar poker establishments, players have been teaming up for as long as there has been gambling. Two players go to a cardroom and sit at the same poker table. They have a predetermined system of signals to communicate with each other about their hands. The theory is that, together, they can better manipulate the betting and, eventually, win a lot of money. This form of cheating is called collusion. |

I love poker. So, I am always taken aback when I realize that most people do not feel the same way. A great many people actually dislike the game and think it is evil. They believe, to varying degrees, that poker represents the moral downfall of society. Amazing, huh?
If you are like me, you play poker regularly, and you enjoy the game, and you recognize that poker is a brilliant competitive challenge. You might easily conclude that everyone likes poker, because you do, and the people you know do. You might figure that even those who do not play acknowledge poker's intrinsic value. |

In October of 2007, a horrible cheating scandal was uncovered at Absolute Poker. The news of this scandal made national headlines. Since then, everything is different regarding attitudes about online poker cheating. Can you feel the difference?
In case you've been hiding under a rock, I'll briefly tell you what happened. During an tournament at Absolute Poker, some players suspected another player of cheating. After the tournament, the player who finished second filed a complaint and requested a copy of hand histories for the tournament.
