TORONTO - Hockey fans called a major penalty against the CBC Thursday as the national broadcaster seemed prepared to do away with the Hockey Night in Canada theme - a beloved 40-year-old musical institution as familiar to Canadians as the country’s national anthem.
“CBC won’t get away with that,” said Mary Quigley of Cape Breton, N.S., outside the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. “The Canadian people won’t let them get away with that.” |

Suspension Ties NHL League Record
Philadelphia Flyers Forward, Jesse Boulerice, has received a suspension of 25 games from the National Hockey League. The suspension was given to Boulerice following a brutal cross-check to Vancouver Canucks player, Ryan Kesler, during Wednesday night’s match. The suspension ties the NHL record for a suspension handed out in relation to an on-ice incident at a hockey game. |

CALGARY -- And so, after eight relatively uninspiring pre-season efforts the Calgary Flames open the regular season Thursday the same way they went into the playoffs last year: with no momentum.
With just one preseason win the Flames have now won just three of their last 18 outings including the playoffs and their final four regular season games. One win came via the shootout and the other two were dumb luck given the heroics of Miikka Kiprusoff last spring against Detroit. |

The Boston Bruins have returned first-round pick Zach Hamill to WHL Everett. Hamill skated in an NHL exhibition game in New Hampshire on Thursday and flew west to rejoin his junior team, which was to open its season at home Friday. A 19-year-old forward, Hamill was the eighth player selected in the June draft after leading the WHL in scoring with 93 points, including 32 goals. |
