Former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion Evan Tanner was found dead near Palo Verde, Calif. on Monday. He was 37.
Tanner had trekked into the desert on a journey to “cleanse” himself, according to Douglas Vincitorio of Tanner’s management team. “He went out to the desert to do a ‘cleansing’ as he called it. Kind of like ‘Survivorman.’” These short trips were not new to Tanner, said Vincitorio. It is something that he has done numerous times over the years.
“What we were told is that (Sheriff’s officials who found Tanner) believe his motorcycle had run out of gas, so he went to walk out in like 115- to 118-degree heat,” Vincitorio said. “He was miles away from his camp. That’s where the helicopter found him. Right now, they just think that he succumbed to the heat.”

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The landscape of the mixed martial arts business may have changed Saturday night as the debuting Affliction promotion came out of its debut show with the potential for several of the biggest heavyweight marquee matches in the sport. The myth of the quiet but unbeatable Russian, Fedor Emelianenko, turned into an undisputed reality as he destroyed former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in a scant 36 seconds in the main event at the Honda Center. Emelianenko, 28-1, who was the PRIDE heavyweight champion from 2003 until the company closed in 2007, became the first World Alliance of Mixed Martial arts heavyweight champion with the win. |

Although Floyd Mayweather Jr. has retired at least twice before, boxing’s pound-for-pound king says he’s really taking off his crown this time.
Mayweather abruptly retired Friday at the peak of his athletic skill and earning power, releasing a six-paragraph letter in which the unbeaten five-division champion said he no longer feels the passion that propelled him to the top of the family business. |

Following a career making victory over Humberto Soto, WBO Junior Lightweight Boxing Champion Joan Guzman sets his sites on bigger game and tries to get a fight with division legend Manny Pacquiao. Ultimate fighter Kendall Grove earned the nickname “Da Spyder,” mainly because of his long, lanky 6-foot-6-inch frame and his nimbleness in the ring. But the 24-year-old Maui native’s nickname could have just as easily been derived from his rough-and-tumble career, which, until recently, resembled a tangled web of frustration and disappointment.
Grove, a onetime Baldwin High School wrestler, moved to Las Vegas in 2000 hoping to develop his jiu-jitsu skills and eventually make it big as a mixed martial arts fighter. To pay for his gym fees, the young fighter cleaned the workout mats every night after class. |

While Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine is the main event for Saturday night's UFC 76 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., the strength of this show going in looks to be more in three intriguing undercard matches. Jon Fitch vs. Diego Sanchez in a welterweight battle matches up two men who look to be one step away from title contention. Sanchez was on the road to a championship shot when he was derailed by a staph infection, which may have led to a lackluster performance in losing a decision to Josh Koscheck on April 7th in Houston. Fitch, a former star wrestler at Purdue, is Koscheck's teammate at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose and comes in with his own 13-match winning streak. |

Superstars Christy Martin and Lucia Rijker will collide in Top Rank's 'Million Dollar Lady' showdown with the winner to earn a purse of $1,000,000 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, July 30. It's a riveting, sensational matchup announced today by Bob Arum of Top Rank. Martin vs. Rijker will be on Showtime Pay Per View. Arum said he will soon announce a compelling undercard. Martin and Rijker will each be guaranteed $250,000 with the winner to receive an additional $750,000. Martin has a record of 45-3-2 with 31 knockouts. Rijker is 17-0 with 14 knockouts. The superfight is scheduled for 12 rounds. Martin, born and raised in Bluefield, West Virginia, says she will win and collect the bonus monies. "Lucia Rijker is a bully, like the ones you see on a schoolyard playground," said Christy. "Like all bullies, once you stand up and fight they always back down. I will show the world and make it all happen on July 30." Both are star performers who strike with power. Rijker, born in Amsterdam and now living and training in Los Angeles, has taken on and defeated top competition for years. She is an extremely hard puncher who attacks early in her bouts. Rijker also appeared, as boxer Billie Blue Bear, in Clint Eastwood's award-winning movie Million Dollar Baby. |
